Real-time visualization of sensor data for operational use

In technical operating environments, up-to-date measurement data is a critical factor for smooth operations. If fill levels, conditions, or sensor data are not monitored centrally, this leads to unnecessary response times, manual checking efforts, and avoidable risks in day-to-day operations. Especially when distributed measurement stations are in use, the need for an intuitive overview that is available at all times increases.

Wesa-Tec GmbH also faced this challenge. They were looking for a solution that would allow sensor data from various measurement stations to be centrally collected, evaluated in real time, and presented in a way that is understandable to non-technical operational staff. new direction GmbH took on the design and implementation of a fully web-based visualization platform.

The Problem

The existing sensor infrastructure provided valuable measurement data, but there was no central, user-friendly application to analyze this information. Relevant values, such as fill levels, had to be laboriously checked or technically interpreted, which made it difficult to make quick decisions.

In addition, there was a need to permanently store historical data in order to identify trends, track developments, and derive long-term optimizations. At the same time, the solution needed to be usable on various end devices without local installation and could be operated safely even by users without a technical background.

The Solution

new direction GmbH developed a modern, web-based real-time visualization application for Wesa-Tec that centrally aggregates sensor data from distributed measuring stations and presents it in a clear dashboard. The goal was to present technical information in a way that makes it immediately understandable and operationally useful.

The solution is based on a high-performance single-page application built with Angular and TypeScript, which displays current measurement values in real time without the need for manual page refreshes. This provides users with an up-to-date overview of conditions and changes within the monitored infrastructure at all times.

On the backend, a powerful C# application was implemented to process and aggregate incoming sensor data and make it available via defined REST interfaces. This allowed the existing sensor landscape to be seamlessly connected and integrated into the new platform.

A PostgreSQL database was implemented for the long-term storage of historical measurement values. This enables time-series data to be archived in a structured manner, trends to be analyzed, and developments to be tracked over the long term.

A particular focus was placed on user-friendliness. Current measurement values are visualized using clear threshold indicators, status displays, and trend graphs. The responsive dashboard is easy to use on both desktop systems and tablets, making it ideal for on-site operational use.

Added Value

With the new platform, Wesa-Tec gained a centralized and future-proof solution for real-time monitoring of distributed measuring stations. Decisions can now be made significantly faster, as relevant conditions are immediately visible and do not first have to be evaluated manually.

Historical data storage also provides valuable information for long-term analysis, optimization, and preventive measures. This not only improves transparency but also supports the strategic development of operational processes.

At the same time, the use of technical data has been significantly simplified for non-technical staff. Complex sensor information is presented in an understandable way and can be accessed at any time, regardless of the device.

The project demonstrates how existing sensor infrastructures can be transformed into powerful, practical control and monitoring solutions using modern web technologies.
